Endowed Scholarship Opportunities
The following is a partial list of the endowed scholarships that Jarvis Christian University offers to (selected) current students who meet the scholarship criteria. These scholarships are based on donor-specific criteria and will be awarded by the Scholarship Committee during the Spring semester. Students may apply from January 1 – April 1. Applications are located in the Scholarship Office. All recipients are required to send thank you letters to the donor(s).
William J. Barber Scholarship
The William J. Barber Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior with a cumulative GPA of 3.00. Preference given to students who hold active membership in a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and studying for the ministry.
Charles A. and Sarah G. Berry Endowed Scholarship
The Charles A. and Sarah G. Berry Endowed Scholarship is typically awarded to one of our Presidential Scholars.
Cleopatra Bell Durkee Endowed Scholarship
The recipient of the Cleopatra Bell Durkee Endowed Scholarship must have: a 3.0 GPA, successfully completed the Texas Success Initiative Test, matriculated at least one year at Jarvis Christian University, enrolled in the Division of Education, high moral character and display good citizenship and belonged to at least one official campus organization.
Brookshire Grocery Company (BGC) Focus on the Future Endowed Scholarship
The Brookshire Grocery Company (BGC) Focus on the Future Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to a student of majoring in business administration with a concentration in computer information systems or cybersecurity with at least a 2.5 GPA. The applicant must be of good standing and display good citizenship.
Camp Normal Benevolent Foundation Endowed Scholarship
The Camp Normal Benevolent Foundation Endowed Scholarship is given to a junior or senior with at least a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, the student must demonstrate extreme financial need and have evidenced potential for professional success after graduation.
John R. and Lucile A. Compton Endowed Scholarship
The recipient of the John T. and Lucile A. Compton Endowed Scholarship must have at least a 2.5 GPA, in need of resources, and display good citizenship.
Herbert R. Duncan Scholarship
The recipient of the Herbert R. Duncan Scholarship must have at least a 2.5 GPA.
Odessa English Endowed Scholarship
The Odessa English Endowed Scholarship is open to female education major of any classification and is renewable through her senior year.
First Christian Church (Rule) Endowed Scholarship
The First Christian Church (Rule) Endowed Scholarship is given to a student with at least a 3.0 GPA, who has a financial need, displays good citizenship and is active in the University Church. Students from West Texas receive preference.
Fouke-Hawkins Scholarship
The Fouke-Hawkins Scholarship is awarded to a descendant of any person who attended and/or worked at any of the following schools: Fouke Junior High, Jarvis High, Hawkins Colored High, Fouke-Hawkins High, or Southside High. Good citizenship, participation in at least one official campus organization, a GPA of at least 3.0 are required. Those with extreme financial need are required to have at least 2.0 GPA. Written proof of the relationship may be needed.
Frazier Endowed Scholarship Fund
The recipient of the Frazier Endowed Scholarship Fund must be a full-time student who has demonstrated academic achievement; a minimum GPA of 2.5; and is member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) who is preparing for the ministry.
Frost-Briggs Legacy Fund
The Frost-Briggs Legacy Fund honors the legacy of Thomas Buchanan Frost and Mattie Briggs, who played significant roles in the founding of Jarvis Christian University. The scholarship recipient must have at least a 2.5 GPA, be of high moral character and display good citizenship.
Patricia Ann Gee Endowed Scholarship
The Patricia Ann Gee Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior with a GPA of at least 3.0 with a preference given to students active in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Greenville Avenue Christian Church Endowed award
The selection criteria for The Greenville Avenue Christian Church Endowed Scholarship includes financial need and a GPA of at least 3.0. All classifications are welcome to apply with preference given to a student active in the University Church.
Thomas J. and Geneva Griffin Memorial Scholarship
Students applying for the Thomas J. and Geneva Griffin Memorial Scholarship must have a financial need, at least a 2.5 GPA and display good citizenship. All classifications are eligible with preference given to students and in the University Church.
Horace and Arizona Hall Endowed Scholarship
The Horace and Arizona Hall Endowed Scholarship is for students who qualify for the honor roll, have at least a 3.25 GPA, have matriculated at Jarvis for at least a year, have demonstrated leadership skills, participated in at least one recognized campus organization, and have an untarnished conduct record.
Hay Endowed Scholarship
The Hay Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually and granted based on financial need, high moral character, and a minimum GPA of 2.5.
Imogene A. Herndon Endowed Scholarship
The Imogene A. Herndon Endowed Scholarship is available to any musically talented students, regardless of major, who wish to participate in the band or choir at Jarvis Christian University. The applicant must have and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA.
HireQuest Endowed Scholarship
Recipients of the Theodora Lillian Hester-Berry Endowed Scholarship must be elementary education majors who have a financial need and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
Charles Murphy Holmes, Sr. Endowed Scholarship
The Charles Murphy Holmes, Sr. Endowed Scholarship shall be awarded to a junior enrolled full-time, affiliated with at least one official campus organization, be of high moral character and a good citizen, have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above and have declared human performance as a teaching field of major field of study.
A.J. Hurdle Legacy Award
The A.J. Hurdle Legacy Award is given in memory of Andrew Jackson Hurdle, a former slave, who became a pioneer Disciple minister of the Christian Church and was a strong advocate of education for over half a century. Recipients must have a high moral character, at least a 2.0 GPA and participates regularly in the religious activities of the University.
John M. Kendrick Endowed Scholarship
Recipients of the John M. Kendrick Endowed Scholarship must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Open to all majors and classifications.
Charles E. Knox and Charles Eric Knox Memorial Award
The Charles E. Knox and Charles Eric Knox Memorial Award requires the applicant have a financial need, be of high moral character and display good citizenship, and have at least a 2.5 GPA. Open to all classifications with preference given to students who are members of the University band.
Bruce McMillan, Jr. Foundation Endowed Scholarship
The Bruce McMillan, Jr. Foundation Endowed Scholarship is awarded to the student with the highest cumulative average as recommended by the Scholarship Committee on the basis of scholarship, citizenship and need. Preference given to students from East Texas.
Memorial Christian Church Scholarship
The Memorial Christian Church Scholarship is open to all classifications. Recipients must have a financial need, display good citizenship, and have at least a 2.5 GPA with a preference for Disciple students.
National Alumni Endowed Scholarship
The National Alumni Endowed Scholarship is for students who have completed at least one full year of study at Jarvis. Additional criteria includes financial need, a GPA between 2.5 and 3.0, campus leadership, good citizenship and active membership in the Pre-Alumni Club.
Alecia Carlos Nelson and Twyla Jewel Nelson Endowed Scholarship
The Alecia Carlos and Twyla Jewel Nelson Endowed Scholarship is awarded to full-time students who are juniors or seniors with a GPA of at least 3.0. Preference will be given to students from the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
Northway Christian Church Endowed Award
The recipient of the Northway Christian Church Endowed Award must be active in the University Church, display good citizenship, have financial need and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA. Open to all classifications.
Lois Potter Scholarship for Disciple Students
The Lois Potter Scholarship for Disciple Students is for students who are members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and have verifiable membership of at least one year. They must also have at least a 2.5 GPA, and serve in the University Church. The award is open to all classifications and is renewable each academic year.
Earl W. and Verbie Rand Endowed Scholarship
The Earl W. and Verbie Rand Scholarship is for first-time freshmen who have a financial need, display good citizenship, and at least a 2.5 GPA. Preference is given to students from Cass County, Texas.
Theodora Lillian Hester-Berry Endowed Scholarship
Recipients of the Theodora Lillian Hester-Berry Endowed Scholarship must be elementary education majors who have a financial need and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
Linda and Doris Rutherford Endowed Scholarship
The recipient of the Linda and Doris Rutherford Endowed Scholarship is required to have at least a 2.5 GPA and must demonstrate good citizenship and Christianity.
Verna Raye Sanders Scholarship
Students selected for the Verna Raye Sanders Scholarship must have documented financial need and study languages or reading.
Mildred Sias Shepherd and Erma Sias Bien-Aime Endowed Scholarship
The Mildred Sias Shepherd and Erma Sias Bien-Aime Endowed Scholarship requires the applicant be a junior or senior majoring in biology, chemistry, education, or music with a GPA of at least a 2.25. He/she must also be of high moral character and display good citizenship.
W. A. Strong Scholarship Fund
The recipient of the W.A. Strong Scholarship must be a full-time student with at least a 2.5 GPA who has a financial need and displays good moral character and citizenship.
Hatton Sumner Foundation Endowed Scholarship
The Hatton Sumner Endowed Scholarship seeks applicants majoring in criminal justice, education, history, mass communication, or social work. Students must also have at least a 3.0 GPA, are civically engaged, and display campus leadership.
Gene and Zelma Brooks Washington Endowed Scholarship
The Gene and Zelma Brooks Washington Endowed Scholarship is for students with a financial need and a GPA of at least 2.25 who graduated from Skyline High School in Dallas, Texas. In the event there are no Skyline High School alumni, consideration will be given to graduates of James Madison High School or the Dallas Public School System.
Peter C. Washington Endowed Award
The Peter C. Washington Endowed Award is available to a junior or senior religion major who has completed at least one year of study at the University, completed all general education requirements, has a verifiable commitment to a career in religious education, and a GPA of at least 3.0.
Wooten/Baker Endowed Scholarship
The recipient of the Wooten/Baker Endowed Scholarship must be in food standing with a minimum GPA of 2.2, in financial need, and of good moral character. Preference given to students from Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Prairie View, Texas, Waller, Texas, Titus County, Texas, or Waller County, Texas.
